One of the most recognizable aspects of Shin Megami Tensei nocturne is the overwhelming strength of its protagonist. The demi fiend is easily the most powerful unit in the game thanks to his fully customizable stat sheet and moveset. So much so that many players have beaten the game entirely with the protagonist alone. This is a pretty impressive feat on its own but I’ve never seen anyone try to do the opposite. We all know that the demi fiend is a nigh-unstoppable force, and it’s a reputation that Atlus themselves have acknowledged multiple times. But I’ve always wondered how well the different demons you can obtain stack up in comparison. Sure the demi fiend is cool and all, but the other demons are a lot better than what people give them credit for. Can you beat shin megami tensei nocturne without the protagonist?

Just like always let’s go over our rules first so we’re all on the same page. Rule number 1: The demi fiend cannot perform any actions in battle other than pass his turn. This includes using items and summoning demons. If it takes a press turn icon, then it’s banned. However, I’m also going to be banning the use of counterskills. While sure they’re just passive skills and don’t always go off, the animation accompanying them straight up plays the standard punching animation which, to me, invalidates the run. But in the same vain, magatama changing and other passive skills are totally fair for the sake of keeping him alive. Rule number 2 is that I’m allowed to use save states. Obviously, I won’t be using them in the middle of fights but I will plop one down at the start of a boss battle to save me having to redo a bunch of content in case I die. Rule number 3 is no new game plus for obvious reasons. Rule number 4 is that I have to get the true demon ending, also for obvious reasons. And finally, rule number 5 is that this run has to be completed on hard mode. As for my version of choice, I’m going to be attempting this run with the North American PlayStation 2 release of the game. This is mostly because of one very specific difference that made me choose it over the Chronicles release, but I’ll talk about that much later.
