I'd rather just play the original, thanks.

Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey is one of the greatest video games ever made. It had some fantastic turn-based gameplay, fun and complex dungeon crawling, and a thought-provoking story with themes that can serve as the basis for hours worth of discussion. Truly a one of a kind experience and one that is worthy of being called a masterpiece. While not the most popular JRPG in the genre, Strange Journey is a game well respected by critics and fans alike. Hell, I even just made a video going in depth with everything the game has to offer and came out very satisfied. However, there was something that I decided not to talk about in that video. Not out of neglect or anything, but because I feel as though this topic is worthy of its own video.

Strange Journey was initially released back in 2009 exclusively for the nintendo ds, but just like every other atlus game from that era, it would eventually be given new life in the form of an enhanced port. Strange Journey redux was released in 2018 for the nintendo 3ds to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the shin megami tensei series. I always found it kind of odd that they chose this title of all things to be their big celebration of that event. You’d assume that they’d capitalize on the hype and release a new game but, they didn’t. It kind of makes sense in retrospect since smt v didn’t release until like 3 years later so in the meantime they probably just said, screw it it and squirted this one out. Funny that this wouldn’t be the last time an Atlus celebration would end with a remaster rather than a new game but in a way it’s worse since those versions of the games were just raw ports without any extra features. And in P5’s case, they actually took stuff away can you believe that? Anyway, Redux is marketed as the definitive way to experience strange journey and when looking at it on the surface, it seems to be no different than other atlus rereleases at the time. Updated visuals, rebalanced gameplay, additional content, the works. If you’re new to the smt series and are looking to get into strange journey, then this might sound like a great deal on paper. Get this cult classic game with even more content on top of that, sign me up. But the thing is, the devil is in the details.

Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey is a great game. Strange Journey Redux isn't and in this Strang Journey Redux Review I will be analyzing and critiquing Strange Journey Redux. If you were to ask me, Strange Journey Redux is Disrespectful to the original Strange Journey for a myriad of reasons. Strange Journey Redux changes the story and gameplay in so many ways that comparing it to the original Strange Journey. In a way, this Strange Journey Redux Critique, Strange Journey Redux Analysis, and Strange Journey Redux Review could be seen as a Strange Journey vs Strange Journey Redux video. Strange Journey Redux is Disrespectful is one of the greatest videos made by Nam's Compendium and is a part of Nam's Compendium's ongoing Shin Megami Tensei Retrospective.
