An Academy Award is one of the most prestigious awards a person can receive in the film industry. The first Academy Awards ceremony was held in 1929, so the tradition is well established in the film industry. Since 1951, every award winner has been required to sign an agreement, giving the Academy a right to buy the award before public sale. If a person were to sell their statuette on the open market, they must first offer it to the Academy for a nominal price of only $1.
