The Spanish Flue did not originate in Spain, so why was it called the Spanish flu? When the Flu became full spread pandemic in 1918, it became commonly known as the Spanish Flu in the United States and Europe. Wartime censors suppressed news of the flu to avoid affecting morale, but the Spain remained neutral during the World War one and because of that, the Spanish media was free to report on it. Since Spanish news sources reported about the flue, people naturally assumed that the flu originated in Spain.
