Command & Conquer (© Westwood Studios 1995) is a real-time strategy with base building, resource collection and army management.

The successor to the well-received Dune II, Command & Conquer (later dubbed Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn) was critically acclaimed, sold over three million copies, and is fondly remembered as an RTS classic.

The plot pits the forces of the UN-backed Global Defense Initiative against the insidious and cult-like Brotherhood of Nod. C&C's single-player campaign presents a gritty narrative of a world very much like our own, slowly sinking into ecological disaster while fanatical terrorists strike against society from the shadows...

Yep, this was released in 1995. Apart from the whole "toxic alien crystal" thing, it's rather foreboding.
