Casasola has a capacity of 23'45hm³ and an area of 112 ha. It affects a length of 6 km of the river Campanillas, affluent of the Guadalhorce on which it is located.
The reservoir defends the district of Campanillas from floods, contributing to the defence of the final section of the Guadalhorce, diminishing its contribution to this river and reinforcing the supply of the city of Malaga.
Casasola Dam is located 19 km from the urban center of Malaga. Its objective is twofold: on the one hand to eliminate the historic problem of floods caused by the river Campanillas, and on the other, to improve the supply to Malaga.
It is an arch-gravity dam, vertical slope upstream and slope 0.45 downstream. The reference surface, which coincides with the upstream face, is an arch of three centres with radii of 200-120-200m. The coronation length is 240 m.
The dam has a height of 76 m on foundations, placing its coronation at level 160. The crowning width is 9 meters, which correspond to 7 meters of road and two sidewalks of 1 meter, the latter cantilevered. The dammed volume, at normal maximum level, is 23.64 hm3. The project avenue, which is defined as that relating to a return period of 5,000 years, presents a hydrograph with a peak flow of 1,745 m/ s. The spillway is fixed lip and consists of three independent spans of 20 m in length each. The lateral bays have their threshold 4 m below the coronation (elevation 156), and the central span 2.5 m below the previous ones (elevation 153.5).
