Castlevania II: Simon's Quest (Nintendo NES) // It's only a video game
Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is a 1987 action-adventure game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). As the sequel to the original Castlevania, the game takes a bold departure from its predecessor’s linear platforming format, introducing open-world exploration and RPG elements. This shift in design cemented Simon’s Quest as an early innovator in the “Metroidvania” genre, blending action, exploration, and character progression.
The game follows Simon Belmont, the protagonist of the original Castlevania, who is cursed by Dracula’s remains. To lift the curse, Simon must collect and destroy five body parts of Dracula scattered across the land of Transylvania. These macabre relics are hidden in mansions guarded by powerful bosses. The game’s progression requires players to explore a sprawling world, solve cryptic puzzles, and navigate treacherous environments.
One of Simon’s Quest's defining features is its day-night cycle, which affects gameplay and enemy difficulty. During the day, towns are safe havens where players can gather information, buy items, and recover. At night, however, towns are overrun by monsters, and enemies in the wild become more challenging. The game also includes an experience system that allows Simon to grow stronger by defeating enemies.
However, the game is not without criticism. Players often find its cryptic puzzles frustrating, as many rely on vague NPC dialogue or obscure mechanics, such as kneeling in specific locations with the right item. Despite these flaws, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is celebrated for its atmospheric music, particularly the iconic track “Bloody Tears,” and its ambitious attempt to expand the scope of the series.
Though polarizing at the time, Simon’s Quest laid the groundwork for future entries in the Castlevania series and remains a fascinating, if flawed, piece of gaming history.
