Castlevania is an action-platform video game developed and published by Konami for the Famicom Disk System on September 26, 1986. It was ported to cartridge format for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and released in North America in May. 1987 and in Europe in December 1988.

The player controls Simon Belmont, who has entered Castlevania to defeat the vampire Count Dracula. It is the first game in the Castlevania series, and was developed in parallel with Vampire Killer, released a month later for MSX2.

History
Another century has passed and Dracula awakens from his slumber with a plan: if he were defeated again, he wouldn't be the only one to die. He quickly caught the eye of a new Belmont: Simon Belmont, Christopher's great-great-grandson who was trained with the experience of the two great vampire hunters before him. Taking place in the year 1691, Simon faces Dracula with all the skill of a warrior and defeats him, in what would be the first game in the series with the title "Castlevania".

Gameplay
The game has six phases, which are played in a strictly linear progression. The main weapon of attack is the Vampire Killer whip, which can be improved by collecting special objects during the course of the game, extending its length. In addition to the whip, various "sub-weapons" can be obtained, providing different types of attacks. By breaking chandeliers and other objects situated throughout the castle, Simon collects hearts, which can be used to activate sub-weapons. Simon can only carry one sub-weapon at a time.

Among the enemies faced in the castle are some mythical creatures, such as Medusa, mummies, Frankenstein's Monster, Death, and Dracula himself, who also appears in ghost form after being initially defeated.
