These 'optional' parts of the game are really tough! I did best against Richter with the Undead Killer whip and the Royal Sword. To be fair, I only used the Royal Sword once and just happened to get lucky and beat him on the one time I used it. For me, using the javelin was the key to beating him. Do NOT use Alucard's Spear or the Stellar Sword. They're just too slow to hit him without him getting a swipe on you with that nasty whip of his.
