The high level of difficulty in Syobon action is attributable to several concealed traps in the level design (such as spikes, "falling stars" and mushrooms). They are found commonly on platforms, clouds, pipes and even in the sky, and are activated (and therefore visible) only when the player is about to hit them. These obstacles make the game very difficult to complete. Some game designers have commented that Syobon action was designed to make it especially difficult for players familiar with gameplay from the original Super Mario Bros.
