(CCPlays) 1984 Soviet Campaign | Part 38: (Partial) Amphib Extermination | Cold Waters DotMOD
Previously, in the 1984 Soviet Campaign of Cold Waters... We sank a NATO diesel sub leaving Holy Loch, exactly as per orders.

Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters. We are playing the 1984 Soviet Campaign at reduced difficulty.

------
11-DEC-1984 Near Holy Loch, England
Our orders are to intercept a NATO amphib landing force going after city of Andoya, Norway.
13-DEC-1984 Near Andoya, Norway
We transited to our patrol area and setup to wait for the amphib landing force.
14-DEC-1984 Near Andoya, Norway
We intercepted the amphib landing force. It was much larger than we expected, and I am a bit short on torpedoes.
We found an Iowa-class BB, a Ticonderoga class CG, 1 x Iwo Jima class LPH, 3 x Lander LTS, and at least 4 escorts (1 x Type 42, 2 x Perry, 1 x Adam), to our southwest, going southeast.
We started with some long-range 65-76 torpedo attack, but only the Iwo Jima was hit and sunk.
In the meanwhile, Iowa and Perry charged me, and I managed to put a torpedo into Iowa, which barely slowed her down. A decoy managed to stave off the Perry and the Adams but I did have to dodge a lot of torpedoes.
NOTE: Iowa has no ASW weapons so it should not behave like an escort, and the DotMod devs have confirmed this is a bug that'll be fixed in the next version.
We dashed at flank speed, trying to kill one of the landers, even as I was forced to use one torpedo after another after the escorts that charged me. One Perry was sunk. Another was forced off and distracted by a decoy. But we did take damage.
NOTE: Yes, I fully admit I'm going easy mode here.
It came down to 1 final TEST-71M torpedo and I was able to sink one of the Landers with it. That brought up the kill percentage to 50%, enough to satisfy the HQ. We disengaged before any of the escorts turned around.
We were recalled to Murmansk. I now qualify for that final transfer to the best boat the Soviet Navy had ever produced... Project 971 Schchuka-B, known to NATO as the Akula-class.
16-DEC-1984 Murmansk, USSR
HQ was ecstatic upon my return, as I was presented with another medal, and my transfer was made a big deal to the press. But I got away quickly as I wanted to see my new boat.
NOTE: Akula is the NATO name. Soviet navy gave the name Akula to the ballistic missile sub that's known to NATO as the Typhoon class.
NOTE: you need 800 prestige to get the Akula, and 700 to get the Sierra.
With no less than 40 torpedoes, I chose to carry 8 x USET-80, 8 x TEST-71M, 12 x 65-76, 4 x Vodopad, and 8 decoys. Why?
USET-80s are dual-purpose... but better against surface targets due to its wake-homing mode. You COULD use them against submarines at close range.
TEST-71Ms are wire-guided and therefore dual-purposes, and should be reserved against escorts or enemy subs as you can guide the torp past enemy noisemakers.
65-76 are the long-range "big red" torpedoes that are built for chasing down ships who thought they're safe running away at flank speed.
Vodopads are for keeping the enemy sub busy while we sneak a TEST-71M closer.
Decoys are often fired in pairs to keep a whole group of enemy torpedoes away.
Anyway, our new orders are to go to Andoya and look for a NATO sub carrying commandos.
And the war continues in the next episode.
