CDS Hands Over his Military Duties 18.07.13
General Sir David Richards has formally stepped down as Chief of the Defence Staff.
In a ceremony at Horseguards Parade he has handed over the job of Britain's most senior military officer to his former deputy, General Sir Nicholas Houghton.
General Richards has warned Britain risks being drawn into a war with Syria if it tries to intervene in the conflict, and he has defended efforts to talk to the Taliban while British troops are still fighting them in Afghanistan.
He said that enforcing no-fly-zones over the Middle East country would be "insufficient" alone to restrain regime forces and that ground targets would have to be hit.
He also said that British forces "would have to act" if the Baathist regime suddenly collapsed, plunging the country into chaos, to prevent its chemical weapons falling into the hands of al Qaida and other terrorist groups.
