Kirby's Avalanche review. Puzzle games are not the first thing someone thinks of when people talk about the Kirby franchise. Kirby's been about coping enemies abilities or sucking-up objects to spit back at big trees that throw apples. The Kirby franchise has seen some of its most interesting games on the SNES with Kirby's Dream Course and Kirby's Avalanche. However, this foray with the ability-stealing pink ball doesn't involve a large magical journey. Instead, this 1995 puzzler has Kirby challenging enemies in an Avalanche Competition to fight his way to a final showdown with King DeDeDe at the Dream Fountain. Kirby's Avalanche is one of two early-mid 90's ports of the Japanese puzzle game Puyo Puyo, which has been released stateside a few times since with games like Puyo Pop. Genesis fans will recognize this game because of some similarities to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The games are nearly identical, but Kirby's Avalanche has bright and colorful graphics, the ability to skip the first 4 stages and some lesson stages. Unlike Mean Bean Machine, Kirby's Avalanche lacks a password system. Are both games worth having in your collection? You decide!
