7This is the Wordle for November 17, 2022 (#516).
Today's starting word is CHALK. Yesterday's Countryle answer was Belarus. Belarus gained independence from the USSR upon the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Though it was organized as a republic, it has had only one free election, in 1994, at which time its president, Alexander Lukashenko, was elected. His current rule is autocratic and oppressive, and he refers to himself as "Europe's last dictator." Before the 20th century, the region was controlled by various powers, including the Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire, and from 1919 to 1991 was a constituent state of the USSR.
Belarus is home to a beautiful region of CHALK quarries that have been flooded to form turquoise lakes. Sometimes called the Belarusian Maldives, these lakes are a popular summer destination for Belarusian families.
