BAE Systems has teamed with General Dynamics UK and several other industry partners to compete in a program to breathe new life into the British Army’s Challenger 2 main battle tank fleet.

The companies said they have joined with Leonardo-Finmeccanica, Moog Inc., QinetiQ and Safran Electronics in a partnership called Team Challenger 2 to respond to a British Ministry of Defence (MoD) request for proposals to undertake a life extension program on the tank.

The British extended the out-of-service date of the tank by 10 years to 2035 in last year’s strategic defense and security review, and the planned life extension program is required mainly to address obsolescence issues on the aging vehicle, although there is the possibility to install some capability enhancements.

Final bids for the British Army's Challenger 2 main battle tank (MBT) upgrade programme were submitted by industry on 11 August.

The life extension programme (LEP) for the Challenger 2 aims to keep 227 of the MBTs in service until 2035 and will see the replacement of most of the tanks electronics, including its sighting systems. The LEP, however, does not envisage a major upgrade of the vehicle's drive systems or replacement of the MBT's 120 mm L30A1 rifled gun.

Five bidders are known to have pitched for the LEP programme, which is valued at around GBP250 million (USD325 million). Known bidders are: BAE Systems, in partnership with General Dynamics UK, Leonardo-Finmeccanica, Moog, QinetiQ, and Safran; Lockheed Martin UK, in partnership with Elbit Systems; CMI Defence, in partnership with Ricardo; Rheinmetall, with Supercat, Thales UK and BMT; and Ruag Defence. Meanwhile Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) was involved in an early stage of the project but has not confirmed whether it submitted a bid.

The bids will now be evaluated by the UK's Defence Equipment & Support organisation. Two bidders are expected to be down selected for a two year assessment phase that will see each team put two MBTs through their LEP offering. Down selection for the assessment phase is not expected until the end of 2016, with a final decision on the prime for the full LEP accordingly not expected until 2019.

Hope you enjoy!
