Chase & Johnny's Excellent Pokemon Nuzlocke Adventure - Part 1: Why Buffalo?
Chase Koeneke and Johnny Amizich are big Pokemon fans. But neither has ever attempted a Nuzlocke playthrough before. With the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes out, we've decided now was the time to change that. Join us as we most likely fumble our way through this challenging way to play a classic series.
If you are unfamiliar with Nuzlocke rules, here's a refresher:
- We can only catch the first Pokemon seen on each route. Route is determined by what the “met at” text says on the Pokemon’s summary.
- Pokemon who faint are unusable for the rest of the run.
- We must nickname every Pokemon we receive.
But we're also implementing a few extra rules to hopefully make things more fun, more interesting and more dramatic:
- Dupes clause: if our first encounter on a route is a Pokemon from an evolutionary line we already have, we must skip it and can catch the next Pokemon we encounter on the route instead.
- No use of legendaries. We can catch them, but we can’t keep them in our party for any reason. They also do not count as encounters, so if they are our first encounter on a route, we can catch the next Pokemon we encounter on the route instead.
- Other banned Pokemon include the Chansey line. It’s boring to watch. If they are our first encounter on a route, we must catch the next Pokemon we encounter on the route instead.
- Trade evolutions are allowed and handled with Johnny's copy of the game.
- We must play on Set mode, which does not allow us a free opportunity to switch our Pokemon after defeating an opponent.
- Items can be used in battle, but we are not allowed to use X items like X Attack or X Defend.
- Soft level cap: while not rigorously enforced, we’re going to try and keep over-levelling to a minimum.
- If we wipe on a battle, the run is over. And we're not starting over.
- No intentional EV training. We battle what we battle.
- Any knowledge/research we do can only be from the original gen 4 Diamond and Pearl games, plus any institutional knowledge we have from our experience playing other Pokemon games. We cannot look up info about Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl specifically.
