(check update below) Octopath Traveler Home Buffer Glitch skip Boss for Chests/Textbox/Sign NS/PC/XB
EDIT: Xbox vid here: https://youtu.be/iiEZw2-z3ps thanks to Zelfear's Realm of Entertainment figuring it out. Also, my PC description for "dragging" the window is apparently unnecessary, and you just hold the top Windows bar - sorry about that, I never used to play in Windows mode so it was new to me. See below for write-ups and links too (videos on glitches, on some legit methods to do buffer glitch bosses, etc).
I do a lot of solo and lone traveler speedruns, and I've been getting questions about how I access chests in boss dungeons without fighting the boss, so I thought I'd make a quick video to show and explain how to do it.
First off, this is an Octopath Traveler glitch available on Nintendo Switch and Steam, PC or Xbox.
The glitch allows you to access boss chests without fighting the boss. It also allows you to move past sign posts when the character says "(I don't think this is where I should be going at the moment.)" and walks back. This is useful to go out of bounds to activate other glitches and can be used to access the Lorn Cathedral Dungeon when it shouldn't be available.
On Steam/PC, there's two methods:
Method 1 (Graphics Driver Reset):
- Hitting 4 keys at once causes a Graphics Driver Reset: Windows + CTRL + Shift + B
- Hitting this combination and then moving in the direction of the boss just before getting the boss prompt of "The sense of danger is overwhelming. Are you certain you wish to proceed?" allows you to move a couple steps past the prompt before getting it.
- Then you can exit the prompt and will be in the boss area and free to loot the chest.
I have heard that instead of the 4 keys, you can also hit Alt + Tab and do that instead as well.
Note: Hitting those 4 keys at once is annoying, so in speedruns or casually, some use a script that maps the 4 together. (https://www.autohotkey.com/ is the specific program I use, but hitting the 4 keys at once is fine.)
Method 2 (Holding the Windowed Mode to Make Lag):
- Enter Windowed Mode
- Hit Alt + Tab so you're in a different program. Move the mouse and click the top bar of the Octopath Traveler game so you can move the mouse freely.
- Click and hold the top windows bar of the game.
- While holding, move your character into the boss prompt. Because you lag so much doing the windows hold, you can move a couple steps past before getting the boss prompt/sign too.
- see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmiVuqA7euw&t=0m57s at 57 seconds for an example
On Nintendo Switch:
Only Method (Home Buffer):
- When you get "The sense of danger is overwhelming. Are you certain you wish to proceed?"
- Hover over and hit "Perhaps not."
- Your character will usually walk back a few steps.
- Right when they start walking back, hit Home to enter your Nintendo Switch Game Selection Screen.
- Hold the analog stick in the direction of the boss while in the Nintendo Switch Game Selection Screen.
- Hit Home to reenter the game and you should move a few steps past the boss checkpoint.
- (If you miss the timing, you can also just mash Home while reentering the game to guarantee you get the timing)
