Checking Out XDefiant's New Gameplay Reveal & Weapons (Ubisoft Free to Play Multiplayer Shooter)
XDefiant: Ubisoft wants testers to draw their curtains at play tests. NDAs are nothing new to the alphas and betas of upcoming games. But Ubisoft is said to be particularly strict with the upcoming multiplayer shooter XDefiant.
After a teaser for a new shooter in the "Tom Clancy" universe, Ubisoft showed the first trailer for xDefiant. However, it was not well received, many users criticize and a large part of the fans apparently wanted something completely different.
▶ This is the situation:
- Ubisoft teased a new Tom Clancy shooter on Monday, July 19th, which looked like a mixture of division and CoD.
- Users wondered what that could be and many were hoping for a new part from Splinter Cell.
- The trailer was released at 8:00 p.m.
- Just a few hours later, the likes counter is below 8,000 likes, while there were over 10,000 thumbs down.
What kind of a shooter is that? xDefiant is a kind of spin-off from several games in the Tom Clancy universe. The Free2Play shooter is designed for PvP, you apparently play in teams against other players.
▶ Gameplay: How does XDefiant play? You can choose from characters from different factions that you know from other games: Outcasts and Cleaners from The Division, Wolves from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint and Echelon from Splinter Cell. Each parliamentary group takes on a different role:
- Wolves are the tanks
- Cleaners are attackers
- Echelon play as a supporter
- Outasts heal the team
Characters can be customized and have different skills and weapons. You have cloaking devices, grenades and weapon attachments as well as ultimate skills at your disposal. The gameplay is roughly reminiscent of an arcade version of Rainbow Six Siege.
▶ How is xDefiant being received? The trailer was uploaded on various channels by Ubisoft itself. However, the downvotes predominate in most videos, in the best case there is a tie (status: July 20th at 2:00 p.m.):
- official channel: 3,966 upvotes to 4,874 downvotes
- Ubisoft North America: 7,882 upvotes to 10,430 downvotes
- Ubisoft Germany: 364 upvotes to 321 downvotes
One of the biggest criticisms is that fans seem to have wanted a new Splinter Cell part. The last part of the series, Blacklist, was released in 2013. But the gameplay and xDefiant itself have also been criticized.
▶ What is popular? Some users don't seem to be put off by the name and presentation and praise what was shown to them. The reddit user Techboah writes: “I'm honest, the gameplay looks fun, not innovative or unique, but if CoD can offer free competition, I'll be there. And it's free, so I don't lose anything if I try it ”(via reddit.com).
Other users also agree and compare xDefiant with older shooters such as Dirty Bomb or Brink. They think that if the game is fun and stays free, it would certainly be worth a try.
▶ "Didn't know Tom Clancy wrote about clowns"
This is criticized: users complain about the branding with Tom Clancy. The author is known for his books that tell of military operations and special forces. It is considered to be the go-to place for thrillers and action with a military background.
Games with his name, such as Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon or Splinter Cell, usually carry this idea of military and realism with them. xDefiant, on the other hand, apparently wants to be more wild and open, places more value on fun and adaptation.
The playable characters sometimes have colorful outfits, fight with flamethrowers and electric batons, drones and cloaking devices. YouTube user Rogue AI says, "I didn't know Tom Clancy wrote books about clowns" (via YouTube.com).
