This is a video of me playing Chee Chai Alien (Game Boy) on my electric blue original Nintendo DS which I unlocked the brightness levels same as the DS Lite via FlashMe (video: https://youtu.be/DIqh0QnSoIw) using an R4 flash cartridge through a DS Game Boy (GB)/Game Boy Color (GBC) emulator called, “GameYob”.

Despite slot-2 of the OG DS/DS Lite having backwards compatibility being exclusively towards physical Game Boy Advance game cartridges which doesn’t allow physical Game Boy or Game Boy Color game cartridges, you can play GB/GBC roms using a GB/GBC emulator made for the DS through an R4 flash cartridge. If the OG DS/DS Lite allows backwards compatibility for physical GB/GBC game cartridges, that would be cool. However, as mentioned before, backwards compatibility is limited to GBA game cartridges only.

Chee Chai Alien is a game made for the GBC & while it was released only in Japan with no other regions, from what I’ve heard, due to the fact that it won’t work on an OG GBA/GBA SP, the game itself needs the IR sensor which the GBC has but all other Game Boy systems don’t feature that. However, despite that, it actually does work on the DS through GameYob fine, although the features that must use the GBC’s IR sensor are disabled since the DS doesn’t have the IR sensor at all. Another thing is that the game is Japanese for the language itself & I don’t know Japanese very well.

At the end of the video, I tested it on my modded GBC with a FunnyPlaying IPS LCD which I replaced the laminated LCD variant & buttons white around spring of this year. Even though I haven’t posted my GBC mod with the white lens & buttons at all as I was busy doing other things, I decided to use it in this video as a brief showcase to show you that Chee Chai Alien works on the GBC but won’t work on the OG GBA/GBA SP.
