Chelnov: Atomic Runner, 1988 Data East
Very difficult scrolling platformer game. As the screen forces you to the right, you jump from platform to platform while shooting at enemies. One button makes you jump, another makes you shoot.. and the third is VERY important to remember-- it makes you TURN AROUND. Enemies will appear behind you and try to surprise you, so mastery of this button is pretty important if you wish to get far in this game. Contact with any enemy directly will kill you (as will their projectiles), but you can land on their head and BOUNCE, ala Rygar. This is an essential tactic when there are long stretches where the floor ends and you must bounce on enemy heads to stay out of the abyss/lava/fire pit. Power-ups are plentiful and are either dropped by enemies (which will kill you if you touch them, so shoot them from afar) or can be acquired by shooting candles. They are very helpful and include chain maces, fireballs, lasers, flying shields, and others. The enemies that drop power-ups also drop enhancements to the weapons, like faster shots, longer shots, and wider shots, and there is also an item that can increase your jump height (either a help or a hindrance, since you can whack your head on an enemy from above and die). The levels in this game are LONG-- especially since you're a one-hit kill! Most levels have a mini-boss that takes several shots to destroy (and you actually don't have to kill them, but you get some nice points if you do), and each level has a boss to take down with several shots. Some of this game's music was re-used in the awesome game MIDNIGHT RESISTANCE. And the final boss is lifted from the ALIEN movies, and the latter part of the fight takes place on top of the Statue of Liberty! Tough game.. Chelnov makes a guest appearance in a SNES Fighter's History spinoff (Fighter's History Mizoguchi: Kiki Ippatsu!), as the boss!
