Chess Knight Cuphead - Everything We Know So Far
Chess Knight is one of the new bosses in the upcoming Cuphead DLC. He is first revealed in the Game Awards trailer.
Appearance:
He is a grey horse with a body shape similar to a chess piece, with a round bottom and lanky hands and legs.
His helmet is a normal golden knight helmet with his ears sticking out, a pink plume of his hair, and neck protection.
His chest plate are mostly red with gold diamonds at the bottom, with a gold ring around his waist.
The joints of his armor around his arms and legs have some round plating. He wields a short sword with a round golden guard and a wooden shield.
Battle:
On the phase 1 His only shown attack is to swing his sword in an upwards arc, tiring himself out afterwards.
Soon after he quickly turns and backs up, it appears as if the player is required to parry his plume to jump over him.
Trivia:
He is currently the only boss in the game to have a permanently parriable part.
In real life, some of the plume on helmets are made of horsehair. In this case, his own real hair on the back of his neck.
It is unknown which level he is fought in, though the Edge cover for Volume 373 suggests that his battlefield is a castle in the air.
Inspirations and Similarities:
This boss are heavily based on chess, the chess board pattern tiling on the floor, chess piece in the banner in the middle of the background and the knight being an actual horse.
In the Game Awards trailer, the transition into this boss fight is two explosions with chess pieces (pawn and rook, knight and bishop) flying out after Cuphead and co. wreak havoc.
He seems to represent Disney's character Goofy in a way because of his teeth and his posture. He also resembles another of Disney's characters, Horace Horsecollar, due to both being horses.
