Chest of Obscurity #84: Axelay
2#84 on the list is a 1992 shooter by the name Axelay and for its time, it feels like the spiritual successor of Salamander (aka Lifeforce). The Mode 7 usage here is by far just as amazing to this day as it was all those years ago.
The plot is that an alien threat known as the Armada of Annihilation has been taking over the Illis solar system and the planet Mother is nearly taken over. The only hope is the Axelay, a small but mighty fighter that can take back the fight, but it must regain its lost weaponry in the process. For what this game is worth, I'm surprised that this wasn't in my video store back in the day, but otherwise a solid shooter all the same.
