Chiebura [ちえりのドキ★ドキ湯煙ぶらり旅] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
Yay, more lost Doujin (or in this case, nearly lost). "Chiebura" (which is short for "Chieri no Doki★Doki Yukemuri Burari Tabi") is another Arcade-style Doujin game released by Nepia World in 2006 for PCs. However, this version of the release was VERY short lived as it was discontinued and ported to Microsoft's Xbox Live service for the X360 as an Indie title and also moved to the PS Vita years later under the PS Mobile banner (both published by another popular Doujin Circle, Mount Punch). Naturally, these options aren't available anymore in the conventional sense, so the most accessible version of the game remains on PCs... but the game was lost for years and was no longer on offer. I've been salvaging some old computer parts recently before disposing of them and found a copy of the game I acquired sometime in 2007 on an old hard drive and managed to get it transferred to my current setup. Aside from a very minor defect on the title screen, the game seems to run fine on Windows 10. In an attempt to preserve Nepia World's quirky title, the game is offered for download here:

There's not a whole lot to say about the premise here: A girl who really loves her Doctor (?) goes to a hot spring for some R&R when the water gets drained and ol' one-hair gets swept underground where the girl gives chase with the help of her rabbit-like creature for one steamy journey. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense but just know that the game (like most of Nepia's releases) is rather challenging with an emphasis on pure mastery of the game's control scheme. Our heroine, Chieri, must face malicious ducks, monkeys, demon takoyaki and other foes as she slowly descends underground, but she is far from defenseless. Chieri will be hurt if she falls into the hot water below or is hit by a projectile, but she is free to touch enemies and also has the ability to kick off walls, use doc's head as a springboard and use her rabbit pal to latch onto various nodes.
When Chieri is latched to a node, things get interesting: she can rotate 360 degrees and shoot energy bullets in the opposite direction she is facing. However, she is violently flung around from rapid fire due to the inertia it presents, so the player needs to be acutely aware of where their next move is and how they want to get there. The screen is constantly scrolling and you will be forced off of a node that leaves the screen, but Chieri has another means of defending herself -- the bunny creates a small chain between itself and Chieri that can be used as a shield against enemy fire and between this and her other abilities, you have to learn how to dispatch enemies quickly and swiftly. Taking too much time will cause the player to get overwhelmed by on-screen enemies who will grow more aggressive the further you descend, and Chieri can only take a few hits.
Nepia World were not completely heartless however... Chieri has one more trick up her sleeve in the form of "Experience Points". By defeating enemies, they produce various fruit which can be collected when you stop shooting which rewards her with experience points. Once she gains a certain amount, she will get an extra life. Naturally, the first few are rewarded as almost freebies so you can get acclimated to the game but the threshold quickly scales up and extra lives are definitely a finite resource (in theory) so you have to make the most use of each one. The game is pretty tough, but after some practice, it becomes easier to get to the second, third, etc. layers and you become more proficient in exploiting certain tactics.
Chiebura is a fun and short little Arcade-style game overall with catchy tunes and cute pixel graphics that encourages multiple attempts. This is a video of the game in action. Enjoy.
