China's Type054B Ship Brief
935The Type 054B is China’s latest multirole frigate, building on the capabilities of its predecessor, the Type 054A, with significant enhancements in both versatility and technology. This frigate features improved stealth design, integrating sloped hull surfaces and reduced radar cross-section elements to lower detectability. It is equipped with modern anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems, including a more advanced vertical launch system (VLS) capable of deploying a wider range of missiles, such as the HHQ-16 for air defense and the YJ-83 for anti-ship missions.
The Type 054B also incorporates advanced electronic warfare (EW) and radar systems, likely including phased-array radar to improve target acquisition and tracking. This class boasts an upgraded power plant, potentially moving from a diesel to a combined diesel-electric and gas (CODLAG) propulsion system, offering better fuel efficiency and quieter operations crucial for ASW. With enhanced endurance and the ability to operate farther from shore, the Type 054B is designed to function as a key asset in China’s blue-water navy ambitions, supporting fleet operations and safeguarding Chinese interests in contested waters.
