1,140History might not give John William Polidori the credit he deserves as a pioneering literary influence, but we’re going to shower him with bouquets of blood-red roses; because while you might not have even heard his name before, he’s the guy responsible for creating one of the most-enduring fictionalized supernatural threats in existence. Yes, it was his 1819 novel The Vampyre that kick-started humanity’s fetish for sultry, blood-sucking socialites who prefer gold to silver and would not want garlic in that Bolognese, thank you very much. So iconic character was Lord Ruthven that he continues to influence creative minds for two whole centuries after his debut appearance; did you check out that new Morbius trailer or what?!
Vampires have been featured heavily in all forms of media, be it books, movies, TV shows and yes, even anime; in fact, we’d argue that anime gives you some of the most-inclusive portrayals of vampire-kind in all media. Just look at these vampires, going to boarding school like good little monsters (Rosario to Vampire still image); or this coming-of-age teen romcom (Karin still image); what about a vampire who’s more into otaku culture than a fresh red bev? (Blood Lad still image) The world of anime is littered with insane, 4-dimensional representations of these nocturnal entities, but no title has been able to draw out emotion by chucking them into a Shakespearean drama quite like 2005’s Blood+. Unlike Shakespeare, though, Blood+’s monsters are real and their reviling nature isn’t as metaphorical as it is literal; hulking, leathery and grotesque with a disturbingly symbiotic relationship to the red stuff.
