the Uncanny X-Men was rebooted in 1975 after a five year hiatus and its, here, after the arrival of new head writer Christ Claremont, that the X-Men finally transformed into a comic book sensation. Claremont was a dramatist and had a keen sense for the importance of the relationships between people and characters and as a consequence Claremont gave his stories a lot of emotional gravity which had formerly been missing from the series: love stories, tragic back stories, humor, friendship, and more importantly, continuity over decades that pulled readers in for more. Really, in hindsight, his stuff was a bit like a soap opera…..and it worked.
