Hey all!

It's been a bit since I last uploaded a VGM cover on the channel, but I'm back this week with a little treat from a very underappreciated JPRG gem. Chrono Trigger is such a monumentally iconic game, and an equal was always going to have an uphill battle being nearly as memorable. It really is amazing to me that Chrono Cross turned out to be such a great game, with beautiful characters and an absolutely stellar soundtrack.

While Chrono Trigger's music will probably always be the most famous, I feel like Mitsuda's compositions in Chrono Cross are much more ambitious, and the sheer scope of the game's soundtrack is really impressive. There are just so many memorable and moving tracks that the list of pieces to cover is overwhelming haha!

I've covered a couple of Chrono Cross pieces for the channel before, but I wanted to do something a little different with this one. Back in the early days of my channel, someone suggested that I cover the ending credits music for the game, entitled "Radical Dreamers." The original is a vocal song that is accompanied by a flowing guitar part. This cover is not meant to be a recreation of the original song, but more of a transformative arrangement. There are so many incredible renditions of this song that stick closer to the original, and I really just wanted to take the piece in a different direction.

I decided to strip the piece down and perform it on a custom Rhodes Patch that I made in Keyscape. It's a simple Rhodes patch with some amp simulation and distortion. I tweaked the patch so that the crunch and distortion really came out when I played with a bit more force. I really wanted to play up the accompaniment's forward motion and push some more dynamic contrast into the piece. I also ended up making some slight tweaks to the rhythmic and melodic structure, just to fit the performance style. After a brief little solo interlude that I improvised, I briefly quote a fragment of the violin motif from "Time's Scar." That piece is such an incredible opening number, and I thought it would be fun to include just a little snippet of it into the arrangement.
