Cirno's Theme (Beloved Tomboyish Girl) If It Was In Pengo
27If you've been with me for at least 3 years, you'll probably remember that I love Coreland and Sega's 1982 arcade game Pengo. It's a cute, colorful, and fun game about a red penguin using ice blocks to fight back against the snowbees trying to do him in. 2022 marked the game's 40th anniversary, and it happened to be the year I finally got into the Touhou Project. If you ask me, it's a marvelous sh'mup series with some incredible music and intriguing characters. And it just so happens that the fandom celebrates Cirno Day on September 9th, 8 days right after what I dubbed Pengo Day back in 2020 (the number 9 is associated with Cirno as a representation of her being called a dummy, or a baka if you prefer). That plus the fact that Cirno is an ice fairy made the Pengo connection even more awesome. So, I decided to make a Pengo remix of Cirno's Theme, Beloved Tomboyish Girl, from her debut in Touhou Koumakyou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (the 6th game in the series, and the first Touhou game made for Windows). Since I was still primarily working with Dn-FamiTracker at the time, I made it for the Namco 163 since it was based on the Namco WSG chip used in Pengo (for the record, Pengo ran on Pac-Man hardware, which is simply awesome). I also tried recreating the Popcorn BGM from Pengo on the Namco 163 to make sure I got the sound right. I was able to find the right wavetables for it thanks to Hoot. 3 years later, I've been doing all sorts of wavetable PSG chiptune in Furnace, primarily with the Namco chips. I realized that now would be the perfect time to properly bring that remix to the original Namco WSG where it belongs. I also pitched it up to A-4=452Hz to match the tuning of Pengo, and it sounds amazing. I do apologize if any volume envelopes aren't accurate; I did what I could by ear. This may not be anything too amazing, but I felt like finally bringing this to the public for this year's Cirno Day. And of course, this also fits for a late Pengo Day celebration.
