Civilization 6 Rise and Fall - Advanced Tutorials | Episode 1 "Are Walls Worth Upgrading?"
Today we are starting a brand new Advanced Tutorial series on Civilization 6. The goal of this series is to look at some of the lesser known mechanics of the game and clarify on they work. Although you may know some of this, my hope is that there is some stuff here to help you make better decisions in your Civilization games!
Today we are talking about walls and how the strength of the walls are determined. We even look at if it's even worth upgrading walls.

Quick Summary:
Range stregth of you walls is equal to your strongest ranged unit (not bombard strength).
The defense strength of your walls is based on a few factors. The game first finds your strongest melee unit and then subtracts 10 from it's melee strength. That is the base damage for all the walls in your empire. Then each city has it's own modifiers that will get added in. +3 for being the capital. +2/+4/+6 for each level of walls. +2 per district in the city.
If you have a melee unit in the city that has a higher melee strength then the base damage for your empire, it will add the modifers for the city to the melee strength of your unit instead.
Couple other things I didn't address in the video. There is a policy that increases both the defense and ranged strength of your walls. If your walls are on a hill, they will get the ideal terrian bonus. And there is always a river attacking penalty if the enemy attacks across a river.
My main takeaway from this is to look at my enemies units before a war is decarled to see if I can conqure their walls. I also feel it's better to put your strongest melee units inside a city, instead of protecting a ranged unit. I also don't really think upgrading walls is worth it, most of the time, for a slight hp boost. I would rather grab a unit or two in that same time and rush out steel to get urban defenses.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed this and hope it's helpful!
