Released for Linux the week before Xmas, Civilization: Beyond Earth is a sequel to Civilization 5, set following the space race which is one of the ways to win the original game. You take on the role of the leader of a colony as it lands on an alien planet and have to control exploration, production, growth, trade, diplomacy and research in much the same was as Civ V but with an entirely different technology tree and a few new wrinkles.

Many see the game as an update of the classic Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri released in the late 90s. I didn't get into Alpha Centauri as much as Civ so I'll refrain from venturing an opinion, the plot is more or less identical, however.

I have been enjoying Beyond Earth, though maybe not as much as I enjoy Civ V. It is accessible enough to Civ V fans and the differences make it interesting. Certainly I expect to rack up a few hundred hours playing it over the next few years so it represents good value for money.
