Cladun: This is an RPG! | Thoughts & Opinions (Review?)
Hello, everyone. This might appear abrupt to some, but I want to say my opinions and thoughts about Cladun: This is an RPG. Part 12 will actually be my final video in the Cladun play through. As for reasons why will be explained shortly. I am saying what’s on my mind about the game, so you might consider this a kind of review in it’s own way. So, I’m ordering this by Story, the things I like, and things I dislike. Firstly, is the story.
The story of Cladun is that the mystical land of Arcanus Cella is a mysterious world said to be full of treasure and wonders. Many characters gather to this location for varies reasons, rather to get away from their home land, to protect someone, find unique items or otherwise, the characters have their own goals arriving to Arcanus Cella. Relatively, the main characters feel somewhat one note, but serve their purpose to some amount. There aren’t that many cut scenes that completely fleshes out one another, and are simply there for them to interact with each other in small and daily life-like conversations. The story ends when the mask that has been a repeated element in the story wants to gain friends and turns into a monster. It is unclear if the mask wants friends to take over Arcanus Cella, the outside world, or was in fact just very lonely.
Onto the things I like about the game. I appreciated the element of being able to make your own character, however, you do not get to do that right away and since you already have an ensemble cast of characters, there was really no reason for me to do that. Cladun X2 most likely fixes that issue by not having cast characters joining your party and you would have to make your own. The game’s old school looking aesthetic is also nice, and the choice between choosing the retro or modern variations of the songs are a nice treat. I personally prefer the modern/real version after listening to it for awhile.
As for things I dislike, the story could’ve been better, and the characters more fleshed way, and the way you could interact with characters could’ve also been better. I will elaborate on this in a bit. Then, from what I understand Cladun is 100% a grind game which is shown by repeated running Rangeons and mostly Newgeons once they are unlocked. Later Cladun entries also create new random dungeons and introduce new classes along with titles to extend playtime. If Cladun was the only the game I ever owned, I wouldn’t mind this, but I do have a backlog of other games to get around, so I’d like to move along.
My final opinion for Cladun is that it is light-hearted game which harnesses retro styled graphics as part of its charm along with its character creation. Past that, it is grind fest when it comes to end game and mostly post game. People who like to grind for bigger numbers extensively will like this game and some others purely for the character creation. Did I enjoy my time with this game? Not-so-much, but not really enough for me to say that I’d quit through it halfway through, this is my own opinion about the game, and some others might outright hate it or enjoy, which I give my hats off to those who do.
If there was anything I’d want to change about Cladun, would be getting rid of the whole decimals in damage all together. I don’t think anyone would care much about decimals added in there. Which is a setting that you can turn off, so that’s already in the right direction. For conversations with the cast, you simply select your main and in the menu there’s a category for side story cut scenes between those characters that you can engage in at any time. This can help break the tedium and flesh out the characters. Say you main Souma and you get to engage with others as Souma if you want to. The cut scenes that happen between clearing dungeons should exclusively be used to introduce new characters and progress the story in some meaningful way.
Would I personally recommend this game? I most likely wouldn’t.
This is my first time prepping and writing a review for a game, so I had to jot my thoughts down and get my words straight. Don’t expect too much of these though. It’s a bit of a quick and dirty review without any real visuals to help aid what I mean, but I hope you all understand regardless. As for the playing Cladun X2 or Sengoku, I most likely won’t be playing those games as playing the first Cladun has re-evaluated my thoughts about the series. I did have an initial interest in Cladun X2 before finding out about the first Cladun game and was about to solely go into X2 with character creation. That was years ago and I did make some characters, like Len from Tsukihime or Melty Blood if you’ve never actually read the novel, Tamamo from Fate, and a couple of other video game characters as well. I could show those off, but my mood for Cladun has pretty much dissipated and I want to move on to something else now.
