Thresh and [DR] versus [9], August 1998

Now we're playing quake here, not quakeworld. Death Row have their own keyboards and mice. No network or computer hassles. How does B2 explain why Death Row are getting beaten so soundly ?
(B2) ... well we have never seen clan 9 before, and we haven't figured out how to break their strategy. We really don't know how they get control of the map so fast. It's like 5 seconds into the game and *bang* they have the map locked down. We need to figure how to get control and stay alive. I guess we should have down more homework... we haven't seen any demos from clan NINE before.
The Cast
Red (Death Row) : Thresh, Unholy, Da5id, Reptile
Yellow (Clan 9) : Paralyzer, Nikodemus, Spice, Xenon
FragBags:
Paralyzer [9] 54
Xenon [9] 46
Spice [9] 30
Nikodemus [9] 29
Unholy [DR] 22
Thresh [DR] 17
Reptile [DR] 17
Da5id [DR] 12
Start Game
Paralyzer grabbed the quad in three seconds but quickly lost it. Nikodemus went on one of the clan NINE patented 'shotgun rampages'. He took out three people at the start. Clan NINE played a similar strategy to the 3rd match, dominating the YA, quad and the exit from the rocket launcher area. Interestingly, they did not seem to worry about holding the MH room. They simply let DR get holed up in there and would charge in with a quad airstrike. This seemed to be a winning strategy for them - after 4 minutes Xenon had 10 squirrels. Paralyzer was quad camping (ahem cough cough) we mean he was playing 'good locational play very close to the quad'.
The match was very entertaining to watch. Great skill was displayed by Xenon who shotguned a DR guy at long distance with a single shotty blast (his victim must have been purrrrty low on health...). DR started fortifying the MH room, but suffered when Quad Spice came by to visit (eheh, sorry Spice :).
Mid Game
Thresh accidently mowed down a teammate... not something we are used to seeing from our hero. DR took back the YA during the mid game and managed to hold it successfully, showing great skill in the face of superior weaponry. DR picked up 20 or so frags this way as the battles centered around the YA area.
Nikodemus grabbed quite a few quads but DR were able to mow him down before he got to use it with a real weapon. Xenon skillfully survives a pair of DR attackers in the 15th minute. Scores were 100-60.
End Game
In the 18th minute, Nailgun Spice killed Thresh. Paralyzer bagged a half century in the 19th minute. NINE take the game. Paralyzer wins the Swedish reindeer sausage for best quad camper (ahem cough cough) 'locational specialist'.
... Well what can we say ? Death Row are very skilled, but are being beaten by a team with an unorthodox but very effective teamplay style. It is good to see that the guys can still keep their sense of humour... this is from the demo log :
Unholy : Alright, no more bribes from NINE !
Unholy : 10k was a really good offer though.
Unholy : ... I love quake2 !
Spice : quake2 is so... different.
Unholy : Give me a dirty RAILGUN !!!
Xenon : BFG rox
Xenon : I live for BFG P)
