We're going back in time one step further. This 20XX art style came right before the one that was supposed to be forgotten. Some of the gameplay elements that are vastly different from the current version are the bosses and the Skytemple levels (still called Eridu).

Most of the bosses in this build are totally horrible and it seems they were only put in as placeholders (in fact, the tagline of the "final boss" even confirms that). Luckily, there are no i-frames yet, so Nina can mash away to make those battles end sooner. The most horribly designed one, Svalinn Gamma, didn't appear in this run for some reason, but I'll make sure he's in the Ace run that I have yet to record.

The other major difference are the Skytemple levels. They always appear as levels 4 and 8 (and in this run somehow also in level 7, which seems to be a bug – where can I report this?) and contain the same two bosses (one of which you already know). But heck, old Skytemple was hard as nails (mostly due to lame and unfair cheapshots, but still). If you can beat Skytemple in this build, I am sure you can easily master current-day hardcore challenges. The only thing that actually kept me from dying were the numerous Blue Landers I found. RNGesus was on my side for a change.

There are no boss dialogs in this build, but there is some lore available in the form of Nina's diary entries, which can be randomly found in pre-boss rooms. These can later be read in the Datalore section of the main menu. I'm showing all available ones at the end of the video (32:10).

This alternative plot is vastly different from the one in the current version, however most Datalore entries weren't implemented, so, unfortunately, we will never know how this story is going to end.
