How does the game know? I indeed hate this crate, and this quest. I didn't find a video of it on Youtube, so I made one myself.

I had a lot of trouble with the battle at first, but it's much easier if you realize that Sharksters have a couple of tells before they attack the crate:

1. A balloon with the text "[hateful bone noises]" will appear above a Sharkster that is planning to attack.
2. A balloon with the text "!!!" will appear above the Sharkster and the Sharkster will briefly hop out of the ground.
3. The Sharkster will then jump out of the ground and fly towards the crate.

There is also an actual bone-cracking sound sometimes, although it doesn't seem to consistently appear with the first balloon.

Watch out for those text balloons, even if they are hard to see with all the stuff that's going on in the screen. Then position yourself between the attacking Sharkster and the crate. If you hit the Sharkster while it's attacking the crate, or simply stand in its way (guarding or taking damage yourself), the crate won't take damage. Note that Sharksters trying to attack you or your teammate won't damage the crate.

The best way to attack the Sharksters are charged shots. If you hit them with a charged projectile at any point, their defense will break for a few seconds. This is the best time to combo them out of existence.

And don't hesitate to heal yourself when there is a window of opportunity. I just didn't because I'm a show-off.
