Classic DOOM is Brilliant & Here's Why
In this video game review and video essay I try out my hand at the video essay format and explain why I believe the classic video game DOOM (1993) is absolutely brilliant creative product that holds up great in 2022. In my opinion there's many things modern video game developers could learn from taking a look at the game design. When COVID happened in 2020 I wound up with lots of spare time for the first time in ten years and wound up getting GZ DOOM up and running on my old Mac Pro tower. I was amazed at how great the game play play holds up and was surprised at how great the entire experience was even in an old video game from the 90's. DOOM is great for many different reasons but in my opinion it's the way the theme of being a space marine fighting your way to the depths of hell to save the world that matches the genre of metal so perfectly that makes the game so compelling. Even though the soundtrack and sound design was all done in 90's MIDI bleeps and boops, if you play the game with a good set of headphones or speakers it TOTALLY holds up. After playing through DOOM and DOOM II during COVID, the soundtrack got me so inspired that I made two cover EP's with my own take on my favorite tracks off each game. I have tracks from my two cover EP's 'DOOM Vol. 1' and 'DOOM Vol. 2' playing throughout this video, and both EP's are currently streaming everywhere. You can also buy a copy of both EP's and complete guitar tabs on Bandcamp.
