In the dynamic landscape of 1960s Marathi cinema, visionaries like V Shantaram and Anant Mane emerged, their focus on exploring the Tamasha folk art form. Shantaram’s ‘Pinjara’ (1972) stood out as a pioneering Marathi color film, ushering in a new era. Transitioning from this milestone, directors Datta Dharmadhikari and Raj Dutt delved into traditional family dramas, creating a cinematic narrative that oscillated between the vibrancy of Tamasha and the emotional resonance of family sagas.

Renowned filmmaker Dr. Jabbar Patel has etched his name in Marathi cinema history with timeless classics like ‘Samna’, ‘Jait Re Jait’, and ‘Umbartha’. His impactful repertoire also includes noteworthy works such as ‘Simhasan’ and ‘Mukta’, alongside the compelling narrative of ‘Ek Hota Vidushak’.

Dr. Patel, known for seamlessly navigating political subjects, brought forth nuanced perspectives in films like ‘Umbartha’, ‘Jait Re Jait’, and ‘Simhasan’, both on the silver screen and the theatrical stage. Among his cinematic gems, ‘Jait Re Jait’ (1977) stands out as a musical milestone, intertwining the tales of a forgotten tribe through dance and featuring an impressive 19 songs.

Following this, ‘Simhasan’ (1981), crafted in a montage style with 35 characters, received well-deserved recognition at the National Awards. Notably, ‘Umbartha’ (1981), with Smita Patil as the superintendent of a women’s reform home, remains one of Patel’s most acclaimed and impactful works, adding to the rich tapestry of Marathi cinema.

‘Ek Hota Vidushak’ is marked as one of the most essential films in Marathi Cinema.
