Amar Singh Chamkila by Imtiaz Ali (2024)
23Composer AR Rahman and lyricist Irshad Kamil summoned the memories of a Punjabi hinterland from nearly fifty years ago with the six-song jukebox for Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila, the biopic of the slain Punjabi folk singer, ‘Elvis of Punjab,’ who shot to fame in the ‘80s with his songs about illicit love, sexuality, drug use, and domestic issues. Back when Chamkila’s akharas in rural areas were lively gathering places where he sang with grace about controversial topics, they would be filled with men, women, and children.
Rahman tries to spice up the sound with new concepts in today’s relatively stale Bollywood environment with an album about Chamkila, a Dalit guy married to an upper-caste woman who sang about the ordinary man’s rustic ambitions and would go on to shine brightly.
However, it is undeniably a victory for Irshad Kamil. With deft footwork, the lyricist has led us into the sensory realm that is Chamkila’s legend, the craze surrounding his life and music, and finally, his untimely demise.
Even though Chamkila’s songs will be featured in the film, the winner of this album is Kamil. His lyrics, which are funny and stick to Rahman’s difficult meters, shine, and paint a multi-textured portrait of a multifaceted artist. He writes in Hindi, Urdu, Hindustani, Hinglish, and Punjabi. Pretty good, actually. Partially even brilliant.
