Big changes are coming to Call of Duty, but surprisingly not because of the recent acquisition by Microsoft. According to a new Bloomberg report, Activision has made the decision that there will not be a Call of Duty release in 2023.

While the 2022 Modern Warfare game remains on track, that game will be supported in full for two years ahead of a new game in 2024. This would mark the series taking a year off for the first time since 2005, where there has been a new COD release every year, every holiday, since then.

The reason? Again, there was a lot of speculation that this was a Microsoft-led decision, and that COD would move to not being annual under them. But the report makes it clear that this was not Microsoft, but rather a response to the uncharacteristically poor performance of Call of Duty Vanguard, a rare large miss for the series in 2021.
