The List of Irish Speaking Rules I Follow
• common words (cheers, lad, c'mere, right)
• "I" becomes "uh-I" (lie, Irish, kind, Carolina, right, try)
• short "a" leans toward short "o" - cat leans toward cot (have, daft, back,
crack, last, passed, add, ashes, act, Alison)
• short "u" turns to "oo" (look, once, must, dozen, gunslingers, button)
• long "u" rises in pitch (blue, moon, roof, tune, chewed, soup, too)
• long "o" rises in pitch (co-workers, won't, so, drove, poked, know)
• vowel following hard "r" rises in pitch (excursion, former, word, convertible)
• elongate "aw" sound (father, ball)
• elongate "ow" sounds (town, our)
• pronounce hard "l" (love, lemon)
• pronounce hard "r", but don't roll (park, hard, bar)
• pronounce hard consonants (ladder becomes latter)
• "oo" sound is shortened to "uh" (you-ya, to-ta)
• never pronounce "ing" endings, always "in'" (morning, during, running)
• "been" is pronounced "bean"
• "any" is pronounced "Annie"
