A primeira versão de Columns ,também conhecido como Jewels, foi lançada em 1990. Trata-se dum quebra-cabeça (puzzle), similar a Tetris, com joias. Fileiras de 3 jóias vão caindo num painel, e o jogador deve arruma-las de modo a juntar fileiras de ao menos 3 jóias iguais na vertical, horizontal ou diagonal, de modo que estas fileiras desapareçam, evitando que o painel fique cheio.
esse jogo é sequencia direta do Columns II do Mega Drive.
Aqui no Brasil, o jogo foi lançado pela Tec Toy com o título Shapes & Columns no encarte, isso por que em 1982, a Avon registrou a marca Columns.
