Comix Zone - Highscore of 125,250 (No Grinding) [World Record]
125,250 points achieved without point grinding on a Model 1 Genesis (console verification at the end). I thought 125k+ points would be pretty easy to get, but this game throws a lot of wacky random stuff at you (so don't bother watching from 14:30-23:00 lmao), and its fair share of bugs sure were a major annoyance at times. All in all, I'm glad it's over and I have this very satisfying result to share with everyone.
So what does "No Grinding" entail? Well, there are quite a few places in the game where the player can grind for infinite points on some endlessly spawning enemies. In order to preserve the competitive integrity of highscoring in this game, I've created a logical ruleset on how to handle each of these instances:
*On page 2 panel 2, the maximum number of Crawlers intended to be dropped is six, but if you allow a lot of Crawlers on screen at once or continuously jiggle the fan switch, Cocoons will keep spawning. Therefore, the limit is that only six Crawlers can be killed.
*On the page 2 panel 6 (the second panel featuring Cocoons on rollers), as long as you're to the right of an arbitrary position, an infinite number of Cocoons will be sent at you. Therefore, the limit is to only have one Cocoon spawn; however you must find a way to get to the left of it to prevent a second one from spawning. This can be done by somersaulting under or jumping over the Cocoon as it drops a Crawler.
*On the page 3 panel 4, an infinite number of Flying Creatures can spawn from the hole in the ground, but only two can be on screen at once. Therefore, the rule is to cover the hole and kill only those two.
*On the page 6 panel 3, the maximum number of Crawlers intended to be dropped is ten, but if you allow a lot of Crawlers on the screen at once, Cocoons will keep spawning. Therefore, the limit is that only ten Crawlers can be killed.
*On the page 6 alternate panel 3 (not visited in this video), Crawlers jump out of a hole in the floor, where Sketch is supposed to kill eight of them in order to progress. However, if Sketch does not DIRECTLY kill them, they're not counted towards that total. Simply standing just to the right of said hole, causing the Crawlers to jump out but fall back in and die can be done indefinitely. Therefore, the limit is that you must directly kill only eight Crawlers.
POINTS BREAKDOWN
Gravis: 1000
Strigil: 1000
Flying Creature: 250
Cocoon: 1000
Crawler: 250
Spawn Mutant: 500

Styx: 1000
Mongoria: 1000
Worm: 0

Pelagus: 500
Mortus: 5000
Combos (100): Causing an enemy to fly backwards through a varying attack style (e.g. alternating punching and kicking) will give you one combo bonus each time. Score-wise, they're not as optimal as finishing attacks so I don't go for these.
Finishes (100): Landing consecutive hits of a single attack style will cause Sketch to attack the enemy with a finishing move. You actually get one finishing bonus for executing the attack, and an additional one if it lands. However, finishing moves do a lot of damage, so it's more efficient to miss a finishing move in order to preserve as much of the enemy's HP as possible for additional finishes. For example, backing Gravis or Styx into a corner and landing multiple up-kicks consistently forces them to jump out of the way of your finishing move! Strigil and Mongoria's AIs work differently, so it's most optimal to finish them simply by punching.
KEY STARTEGIES
*Enemies often have odd interactions with other sprites; on page 2 panel 2, turn off the fan, and just before Strigil is about to die, push him over to it. After you finish him off, you can still grab him while he's falling and perform yet another finish. Perform as many of these as possible until the game randomly makes you miss a grab or the Strigil is sent flying to the left.
*Page 2 panels 5-6: Rolling Cocoons will drop a Crawler if they bump into each other, after you attack them, or another enemy touches them. In the latter case, I only forced Gravis to touch the Cocoon on panel 6 once because a second time could send it off-
screen.
*Grabbing a Spawn Mutant can transform it into a Gravis or Strigil, each of which are worth 500 more points when killed, plus a potential for extra finishes.
*On the Tournament of Page 3, the game does not want you to use a Super Fist in order to progress and will respawn only one of whatever enemy you killed (so using it against the Strigils isn't necessarily optimal). The most optimal method is to use the Fists just before you believe either Gravis or Styx is going to die.
*When fighting Mortus, the final boss, Flying Creatures will spawn from him after each major hit. However, since only two can be on screen at once, aim to kill those before you inflict another major hit.
