Red Alert was quickly created to cash in on Command & Conquer's surprising success, but Westwood was afraid of having a playable Nazi faction in the game. Instead, it was reworked to feature an alternate timeline that served as the direct prequel to Tiberian Dawn.

After a stellar performance in a placeholder video, Joseph Kucan, Westwood's lead video director, was given the role of Kane and, to date, has played the character for over 15 years.

Command & Conquer was originally intended to have a high fantasy setting, but was changed to a contemporary war setting to better suit the political climate of the 90's, therefore making it more accessible.
