Raid over Moscow, developed by Bruce Carver and published by Access Software (US), U.S. Gold (EU) and released in 1984.

"The Soviets launch a nuclear strike against major cities in the United States and canada. With our own nuclear arsenal dismantled, in accordance with the Salt IV arms Agreement, the Soviets believe their treachery will lead to total world domination. Our only hope is our space station equipped with stealth bombers, which can fly undetected in soviet airspace. As squadron leader, you must lead your commandos on a virtual suicide mission; knock out the Soviet launch sites, and then proceed into the city of Moscow. Armed only with the weapons you can carry, you must seek and destroy the Soviet defence centre to stop the attack!"

Bruce Carver steps it up again with another multi sequence action game. Not too well received at the time due to the subject matter but has gone on to be another really well known and loved C64 game. I don't recall playing this much mainly due to its difficulty but playing it now its not that bad once you know what you are doing. For the longplay, Suicide mode is being played.

The game opens up with the Soviets launching their rockets and showing 4 launch sites you can attack. There is a time limit which shows how long you have before the rockets hit and you need to destroy the control centre in that time. In the first sequence you start in the space station and board your craft. This is the first challenge and will have likely put people off the game. Instead of launching forwards, you launch to the left. With no gravity, you need to take control of the craft by adjusting its thrust. Get it lined up and thrust towards the exit. Just make sure to open the doors in time and don't take too long in leaving as those doors close again real quick. You can at this point launch more fighters. This leaves them in orbit should you need another craft quickly by getting destroyed on the ground. Otherwise you will need to relaunch. It may save some time and you will need to re launch when attacking a new target anyway.

Now we can attack the launch site. This section is not so difficult but pay attention to the height based on the shadow, you don't want to hit the ground. Just fly across, duck under the bridge then shoot any optional targets as they appear. If you make it to the end, the next sequence requires the destroying of the control centre (the middle one). Your craft will turn blue when you are at the correct height, at this point fire. Optional targets are the launch silos. Destroying these gives you points and most importantly, extra ships!

Once all launch sites are destroyed it's onto Moscow. Once you reach here the next sequence is to kill all the guards and the tank and find the right door to the nuclear control centre. You need to adjust the height of your rocket launch to reach each target but dont dont stay in one location too long as they will shoot at you.

Once in the Nuclear Control room, you need to destroy the robots that attend to the cooling rods. Do this by rebounding discs off the walls to hit them. The robots take multiple hits and you need to destroy 5 of them on this difficulty. Should you run out of discs, its back outside to fetch ammo and fight your way back in. Once the last robot is destroyed, Moscow goes up with a bang and you win the game!
