Commodore - Episode 196 - 4040 Faster To Fail - iPAD Testing - David Bradley - Pet SuperPET C64
Well, after putting a new capacitor into the printed circuit board of the 4040 commodore dual floppy disk drive, I was hoping it was fixed, but alas, it is much the same, although it does seem to fail faster than it did before, in the same fashion as it did before, and indeed, heat seems to be the cause as a blast of air brings it back to life, but it is strange and baffling as well.
I suspect that maybe the 6522 could possibly be part of the trouble so I swapped it out, but alas, the failure is just the same as it was before...
I am going to try to switch out the 5 volt voltage regulator, as it does seem that is somehow involved in this, but then again, is it a symptom or the cause? Excellent question.
Swapping this will not be easy...it is riveted to the board and the heat sink, so some drilling will be necessary...and some soldering and unsoldering...and patience...steady hands, etc...
I recorded this episode with an iPad to see if it got better coverage and it did...not sure about the quality of the video, but I will be more careful to wear shoes when I shoot if I use this again!
Definitely a wider angle shot and thus, more can be see, which I think is a good thing...I will continue to experiment!
So, the drive heats up and the drive fails...blast it with the fan, and it works again...here we go again!
