Communciation Logic Battle Daisesen'' (通信察戊ロゞックバトル 倧雪戊)
Forty Five, the developers behind the reprehensible July and the unique Tokyo Bus Guide are back at it with their latest Dreamcast release, Communication Logic Battle Daisesen, also referred to in some circles as just Communication Logic Battle or Daisassen. The name may scare you off, but this game has actually turned out to be an enjoyable little puzzler. And best of all, gamers in Japan can play it Online!

The idea behind the game will remind you of the classic boardgame Battleship. You start off by setting up a group of twenty troops on a 10x10 grid. The troops come in a variety of layouts, from single troops to groups spanning multiple grid blocks in a variety of different shapes. You then take your board into a battle with another board, your goal being to eliminate all of your opponent's troops. This is done by placing bombs of varying shape and size and hoping they strike one or more of your opponent's troops. Strike a lone single troop, and he'll disappear from the board. Strike a troop that's part of a group, and he'll reveal himself. Strike all troops in a group, and that group will disappear. Eliminate all the troops from the board, and you win and are declared super best.

Forty Five (45XLV) has actually added a bit more to the mix, managing to implant some strategy into what would otherwise have been a lesson in pure randomness. If you place a bomb that hits a square adjacent to a troop, the game will display an exclamation mark in that square, indicating that you ought to place bombs in that area in order to strike the adjacent troops. The actual bomb types that you have available are limited to the shapes that you've used in constructing your board - so, if you construct a board with single soldiers, you'll have access to nothing but single bomb pieces, making finding your opponent's whereabouts difficult. You'll need to use some of the larger pieces in order to ensure that you have a worthy arsenal, although doing so has the side effect of making your troops more visible to your opponent.

There are a couple of other caveats. If your opponent should destroy all groups of a particular size from your board, you won't be able to use a bomb of that particular form again (with exception to single bombs, which are always available). Also, you're limited in the number of pieces you can bomb in a given turn, so you're sometimes forced to use smaller bomb sizes until your bomb meter has replenished, something that happens at the end of every turn. Finally, if you get down to one piece on your board, you gain the ability to use a special desperation attack, which can strike massive areas of the grid or show you the enemy troop whereabouts.

Like all good puzzle games, the game in practice is far simpler than it may seem through description. You'll figure out all the above details quickly, and then it's simply a matter of, as the title suggests, using thought and logic to eliminate your opponent before being eliminated yourself. The game helps you out in every way, by displaying detailed information on your opponent's board as gathered during your battle, be it X's in squares that have proven to have no interest what-so-ever, or exclamation points in squares whose neighbors seem to have troops. You can't sit there thinking non-stop, though, as your move selection is timed. You'll also find that an initial board layout is as important as being clever while in the match, so you'll have to put some thought into actually setting up a board in order to best keep your opponent from finding your whereabouts.
