Concentrated hydrochloric acid when kept in open air sometimes produces a cloud of white fumes. This is due to :
(1) Strong affinity of \( \mathrm{HCl} \) gas for moisture in air results in forming of droplets of liquid solution which appears
P like a cloudy smoke
W
(2) Due to strong affinity for water, conc. \( \mathrm{HCl} \) pulls moisture of air towards self. The moisture forms droplets of water and hence the cloud
- (3) Conc. \( \mathrm{HCl} \) emits strongly smelling \( \mathrm{HCl} \) gas all the time
(4) Oxygen in air reacts with emitted \( \mathrm{HCl} \) gas to form a cloud of \( \mathrm{Cl}_{2} \) gas
