Connel Fullenkamp is Professor of the Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Economics Department at Duke University. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 1999, Connel was a professor in the Finance Department of the College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. He has published articles on financial market development and regulation, the economic and policy implications of risk sharing, and the macroeconomic impacts of immigrant remittances. Recent publications include “Toward a Nature-Based Economy” in Frontiers in Climate Change and “Financing Conservation by Valuing Carbon Services Produced by Wild Animals” in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. His op-eds have appeared in Newsweek and The New York Times.
Connel has been a Visiting Scholar and Short-Term Expert for the International Monetary Fund’s Institute for Capacity Development since 1999, which consists of training government officials around the world. He is a member of the Institute’s finance team, which trains central bankers and other officials in financial market development, inclusion, and regulation. He is also an educational consultant to The New York Times.
Originally from Sioux Falls, SD, Connel was named a Presidential Scholar by the U.S. Department of Education in 1983. He then earned his BA in Economics from Michigan State University, which named him one of its Alumni Distinguished Scholars. In 1985, he was named a Truman Scholar. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Economics at Harvard University, where he was also awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.
