Contra Ending
Ending #56
Contra
魂斗羅
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami
Nintendo
1987
I finally did it. I beat Contra. I honestly don't know why it took me this long to do it in the first place. I saw some buddies at work playing it, and was like, 'Damn, I should do that.' So together with my eternal Player 2, my lovely gaming wife, we spanked this game....in like forty minutes....with a Konami code at hand....
This game is an absolute classic. What could I possibly say about this amazing title that hasn't already been said? It was originally an Arcade title that made its way to the PlayChoice-10, MSX2, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, MS-DOS and, of course, the Nintendo.
When you think about how conformed we are to the three console system it makes you easily forget that at one time, before the console wars, in the dust of the great video game crash, the world of gaming was a wasteland of mutants and road gangs, much like Detroit today.
Clearly Nintendo rose from the ashes and became the de facto system for much of the late 80's. It is because of this we forget the little one-off consoles of the third generation. Look at this list of systems: Amstrad CPC, Atari 7800, Atari ST, BBS Door, Commodore 64, Famicom Disk System, FM-7, MSX, NEC PC98, NES, Oric 1/Atmos, Sega Master System, Sharp X1, Sinclair ZX81/Spectrum, Super Cassette Vision. (list of third gen. systems from the GameFAQs site.)
Once the NES came out it's a wonder developers even ported games for other systems given the vastness of the field. Contra was released on no fewer than 6 other platforms during the time. It's really fascinating to look back at gaming history and think how we got to this three console system....but enough of my non sequitur.
It's also interesting to note that this game was called Gryzor in PAL regions for these other consoles. This alone should have made PAL regions question themselves.
Also, everyone should check out the Contra arcade advertisement for this game. It's classic 80's -- this hot chick, strapped with knives and grenades, apparently in some Columbian jungle happens upon this camouflaged arcade deck plugged into a tree or something. Totally forgetting about her mission, she stops, poses, and plays some Contra. Why does this never happen in reality?
