I woke up today, grabbed my coffee, checked my usual sites (Drudge, CoasttoCoast, Gamefaqs), went to look around the Steam forums, when suddenly, like breaking the silence in a church, my wife says, "You should play Evoland!" She had recently played and beaten the game several days before and promised me I would enjoy it. Well, I had a whole day to kill, let's see about this Evoland....
Seven hours later, here I am opining about this game, vindicating my wife's prediction, and feeling better about my gaming prowess. If you grew up playing RPGs like I did, then definitely check this little gem out. The game is literally one big reference to everything else in the genre. If parody is the finest form of flattery, then this game swoons at the mere thought of RPGs.
Just off the top of my head you have Goombas, Cloud, Link, Aeris, Diablo, Torneko, Dragonball, Piranha Plants, Kefka, Chocobos, Buster swords, Cid, airships, and even NPC stereotypes. This was a very abbreviated list too. The battles are turn based, Zelda-esque, and hack-'n-slash. The only types of rpg they left out were first-person dungeon crawls, and strategy. Clearly, the developers were fans.
The whole experience feels like something a fanboy with programming chops would throw together in about a day, just for the comedy of it....coincidentally, that's exactly what did happen. This game won first place in the Lundum Dare competition. If you are unaware of what that is, it's o.k., but you should really check out the site, and impress others with worthless knowledge. I make a living out of doing that.
