I find this to be the superior version of Contra, as much as I like the arcade.

I first played Contra as a kid in the 80s. As I grew up and became more focused on shoot em ups in general, I started taking the game more seriously. In 2007, when Contra 4 released, I unlocked Contra and Super C, and I used to play Contra on my Nintendo DS while I was out at the laundromat after working 3-11. I'd sit there and play at around midnight while I was waiting, and my standard was to get to loop three before it was time to go. Oh, and that was without continuing.

My original intention was to record a two loop playthrough, but as I was playing earlier in the morning that I recorded this, my left thumb started to cramp while I was in stage 8 of the first loop, and as I tried to work it back and forth to loosen it up, I decided to just go with what I got here. I left in the stage title screen for the beginning of loop 2, because I wanted you all to see that I had 10 lives in reserve on starting. Who needs 30 lives? This game is so generous with giving you extra lives that you don't need them.

This was just casual play for me here, and when randomness reared its ugly head, or I made stupid mistakes, I just went on because it was fine.

I own a Super HD-2 clone hardware system that has a slot for NES and SNES games, and it has an HDMI output. I still own my original SNES from Christmas 1992, and I have an NES, but this thing is much better for playing old games on my HDTV.

There is a ton of sprite flicker in this game, which doesn't lend itself well to uploads.

Oh man - while I don't care a whole ton for video game stories, Bill Rizer is my all time favorite game character. He's the man. He hit his peak in Contra: Shattered Soldier, which is my all time favorite Contra game. Lance is awesome too. How could you go wrong with these awesome guys? Answer - you can't. They're unstoppable.

Last - I was 37 years old in 2018. That should tell you why I love shmups and old school style games in general so much.
